What music programs were you involved in while at HCHS?
While a student at HCHS, I was a member of the concert band, marching band, Jazz Experience, and vocal music programs.
What path did you take after graduating high school?
I attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Music/Jazz Studies, and I currently work in healthcare in the Iowa City Area while continuing to participate, perform, and educate within the music community.
How did growing up in the Harlan Music Program affect your high school experience?
I helped me develop close relationships with friends and community, along with lifelong memories and culminating lifetime skills. I had such a positive and influential experience that I decided to pursue further education in the field. Although my current occupation does not directly relate, I have developed many positive relationships and skills that have transferred to my current work and passions – communication skills, people skills, teamwork, perseverance, etc.
What are you doing with music right now?
I am currently a member of AFJOI (All-Female Jazz Orchestra of Iowa) that performs “for the purpose of encouraging girls to find their voice in the jazz idiom.” We had the pleasure of performing for the 2018 Iowa Band Masters Association in Des Moines and 2018 Luther College Summer Camp. I have also had the privilege of being a member of the Oakdale Community Choir in Coralville, IA, along with the opportunity to conduct during their annual winter performance directed by Dr. Mary L. Cohen of the University of Iowa. The experiences and relationships developed as a member of the Harlan Community Music Program have greatly impacted my life and continue to help me grow in my passions and pursuits.
